This is Michel Hazanavicius’ first animated film
Scenario
In war-torn times, a poor lumberjack and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and saves a girl, which brings an irreversible change to the couple’s life and the path of those who cross the child.
This is the best 2024 release I’ve seen so far this year, and we’re in mid-December 2024
It tells a story that takes place in Poland during World War II, like a popular story. Much of the plot, typical of the aforementioned folk tales, revolves around a couple of lumberjacks who want to adopt a Jewish girl who was thrown off a deportation train through their forest.
Everything is fine on the technical side as well
Her father threw her out to save her from certain death in Auschwitz. I won’t go into the details of the plot so you can see them for yourself, I just want the film to reach a deeply philosophical conclusion.
The scenes in the film are excellently done
The drawing style is very precise, not too detailed or harsh, mostly poorly lit scenes appear with dominant gray tones that emphasize the horrors of the most infamous war and massacre in human history. And the soundtrack is sublime: the score, the sound effects, the narration and the dubbing (I saw the original in French), all perfectly suited to presenting this gem.
